Risk-taker, Cedar, and his sarcastic, introverted, female friend, Sorrel have real reasons to trust each other. Cedar’s excluded from school, after being accused of hitting a homophobic bully. Now he’s stuck with his dad, doing a landscaping job for a politician called Charles Fenwick. Cedar witnesses a guy being viciously assaulted by Fenwick. The victim claims Fenwick and his mates are psychopaths and anyone who works for them ends up linked to their corruption. There’s no way Cedar’s letting his dad get dragged into anything suspect. Cedar’s gut feeling is on high alert. Needing help, he tries to track down the one person Sorrel can’t cope with seeing, the enigmatic girl, Eyam, who days before, turned up at their school asking questions about a governor and his ‘criminal associates’. Why has Eyam disappeared?  Sorrel is having panic attacks, convinced that Eyam has cut off contact because she knows Sorrel has a major crush on her. Cedar is in enough trouble and Sorrel is determined to stop him diving into any more danger. Not everyone is allowed to live.
